Katie Wright, emergency department consultant

Katie is an emergency medicine consultant, dual accredited in paediatric emergency medicine, and the co-lead for the children’s emergency department at Heartlands Hospital.

She has been a consultant in the ED here for three and a half years. This was her first consultant post after previously working as a registrar.

She was born in Selly Oak and currently lives in the Birmingham area and works on all three sites.

After medical school in Sheffield and she did rotations in medicine, paediatrics and intensive care, around the West Midlands and Sheffield.

She was a Registrar in General Medicine before deciding that she wanted move into emergency medicine.

Katie, a mum of two boys, describes the ED team as being a bit like “a family”, a place where people support each other and draw upon each other’s experience.

Katie said: “It’s a really supportive and friendly atmosphere that I think we we all need when we’re working in the emergency department. It’s stressful, it’s intense and  it’s going to be predictably busy,  it’s going to be hard work – it’s not an easy choice but doing it with people around you that understand, that feel the same, that they step in and support each other just makes it brilliant.”
