Delivery Suite

midwife Amanda LoweThe Princess of Wales Maternity Unit, Heartlands Hospital serves a diverse population. We are at the heart of the community in East Birmingham. We are able to offer care to a wide range of women  and always endeavour to meet the needs of not just the women but the families we care for. Our Delivery Suite has 11 delivery rooms and a brand new Water birth room. This enables us to offer water birth to women who may ordinarily not have been able to choose this option due to any concerns with their health or their pregnancy. Our delivery suite also has a 4 bedded assessment area and  a six bedded induction of labour area. For women who may require an unplanned caesarean section there are 2 operating theatres on the delivery suite.

Choice is central to the care that we provide and our midwives, maternity support and team of doctors strive to ensure that women have the birth experience they desire. If your pregnancy and labour are low risk you will be able to be care for by a highly experienced midwife throughout your stay. You will also have the option of a 6 hour transfer into community care  if you and your baby are well and have no concerns. If this is not the case you will be accommodated in one of 3 wards

Our team of Supervisors of Midwives are also on hand to ensure that you are listened to and have a voice in the service. Supervisors are senior midwives who ensure practice is both safe an d appropriate

Women and their babies are also cared for by a team of neonatologists, obstetricians and anaesthetists which give full 24 hour cover.
