FOI 0035 2019/20 Smoke-Free Policy

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) completed a merger by acquisition of Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) on 1st April 2018.   Due to historical differences in data collection/reporting across UHB and the former Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust some responses have been provided by hospital site.

Do you have a Smoke Free Policy?

Yes

Does your policy include Vaping? If so what is your policy around vaping for staff and for patients/visitors on the premises/grounds?

Yes for Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospitals

No for Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham

How do you communicate this policy to staff and to patients/visitors?

Managers to ensure that clinical and non-clinical staff are made aware of the requirements of this policy and ensure the use, recharging or sale of e-cigarette / smoking cessation devices is prohibited in all Trust buildings”.
AND

To ensure that everyone entering Trust sites understands that smoking or the use of e-cigarettes or other smoking cessation devices are not allowed in Trust buildings except in designated smoking shelters:

Clear warning / advisory notices / signs will be on display in buildings

Tobacco and tobacco products or e-cigarettes or other smoking cessation devices will not be allowed on sale at any Trust site

Trust staff at all levels will actively discourage smoking in buildings

If not – has this caused a problem with staff/patients smoking in the neighbouring areas offsite – causing a problem to local residents?

Not applicable.
