FOI 0554: Chair

1. When Rt.Hon. Jacqui Smith was appointed chair of UHB it was reported she would work 3 days per week at a salary of £50K per annum. Can you confirm this is correct?
On appointment as Chair of University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) in 2013, the Chair’s remuneration fell within the bracket £50,000 – £55,000, as reported in UHB’s Annual Report and Accounts. Whilst the Chair, in common with other Non-executive directors, is not contracted to work a specific number of hours or days in any given week, the expectation is that the role will require an average commitment of 2 to 3 days per week.

2. When she was later appointed Chair of Heartlands the same details were reported in the press. Can you confirm this is correct?
On appointment as Chair of Heart of England Foundation Trust (HEFT) in 2015, the Chair’s remuneration for this additional role was set at £50,000 per annum. As for UHB, at HEFT the Chair, in common with other Non-executive directors, was not contracted to work a specific number of hours or days in any given week. The stated expectation was that the role would require an average of a minimum of 2 days per week.

3. Since the merger has there been any changes in the published T&Cs of her role or is she still working 6 days per week?
As HEFT has ceased to exist following the merger by acquisition, the Rt Hon Jacqui Smith is now only the Chair of UHB. As per the response to question 1, the expectation is that this role will require an average commitment of 2 to 3 days per week. Her remuneration for the role falls within the bracket £50,000 – £55,000, as reported in UHB’s Annual Report and Accounts.
