I would like to know whether hospitals within your foundation trust a) nitrite-cured ham in their meals and b) other processed meats containing nitrites in their meals, including but not limited to bacon, salami or chorizo.

I would like to know whether hospitals within your foundation trust a) nitrite-cured ham in their meals

Yes, cured ham food is purchased from government approved suppliers and used within Hospitals of the Trust for patients and retail.

Nitrites added to products from approved suppliers are in line with EU Food Safety Authority (EFSA) limits and guidelines.

  1. b) other processed meats containing nitrites in their meals, including but not limited to bacon, salami or chorizo

Yes, in line with EU Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Products are purchased from NHS nominated suppliers.

Processed foods may contain Nitrates or Nitrites (E249 –E252) products such as:

  • Sandwiches with process smoked meats
  • Gammon
  • Smoked fish
  • Smoked products
  • Sausages
  • Bacon
  • Sausage rolls
  • Pork Pies
  • Scotch Eggs
  • Processed foods
