University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) completed a merger by acquisition of Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) on 1st April 2018.  Due to historical differences in data collection/reporting across UHB and the former Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust some responses have been provided by hospital site.

 

1)       How many clinical coders do you employ?

     60.4 WTE

 

2)      How many coders, employed by your Trust, hold the National Clinical Coding Qualification?

25

 

3)      Do your coders have targets for how quickly after a Finished Consultant Episode they should code it?

Queen Elizabeth Hospital: We have weekly targets.

 

Heartlands, Good Hope, and Solihull Hospitals: Our coders do not have specific targets set after a finished consultant episode.

 

4)      Do the coders code from the case notes or an Electronic Patient Record?

Both.

 

5)      How often is a Payment by Results clinical coding audit conducted?

When required.

 

6)      Which clinical coding reference books do your clinical coders use (including the version)?

ICD10 10th Revision, OPCS 4.8.
