Talk at Good Hope will provide advice on managing chronic pain

photo taken for New@Sufferers of chronic pain conditions and those interested in finding out more about pain management will have a chance to learn from two specialists in the area next week at Good Hope Hospital.

Dr Laura Hissey, psychology lead in the pain service at Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust and her colleague Susan Jones, a clinical nurse specialist in the team, will take to the floor to provide an informative health seminar on managing chronic pain.

They will provide an overview of the assessment and interventions that the pain service at the Trust offers to patients, as well as discussing the role of the multi-disciplinary team in offering pain management.

Dr Hissey said: “The pain service at the Trust includes consultants, physiotherapists, psychologists and a clinical nurse specialist, and the service we offer is based on the best evidence available to enable us to offer gold standard assessment and treatment.

“The talk will see us discuss the different aspects of pain management we offer, touching on the importance of physiotherapy and psychology in our work, as well as pain relieving medications and injections.

“We will also look to speak about the importance of self-management in managing chronic pain. People only have access to healthcare professionals for a few hours a year so understanding self-management of pain is vital.

“There are things that people can do themselves that will make a difference and potentially improve their quality of life and hopefully some of the advice we are able to speak about at the talk will prove to be of benefit to members of the public.”

The talk will take place on Tuesday 18 April at the Education Centre at Good Hope Hospital between 5pm and 7pm. To book your place on the seminar please contact Sandra White, membership and community engagement manager, on 0121 424 1218 or email membership@heartofengland.nhs.uk
