Community Midwifery

Our community midwifery team work from three hospital bases Good Hope Hospital, Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and University Hospitals Birmingham. There are currently 9 midwifery teams, these are

  • Green team
  • Highfield Team
  • Castle Team
  • Wood Team
  • Elmdon team
  • Shirley team
  • Colebank team
  • Erdington team
  • Sutton team

There are also two continuity of carer teams where midwives follow women throughout their pregnancy, birth and postnatal period –  these are Team Mcall and Team Nightingale

University Hospitals Birmingham have a standalone birthing centre at Solihull Hospital which is covered and run by Solihull community midwives. The birth centre facilitates births for women who have no medical or pregnancy related complications. The birth centre offers a home from home service where women can use the two large birthing pools to have their baby with one to one care.

Overall we have 104 midwives and 22 midwifery support workers that work across East Birmingham, Sutton and Erdington and Solihull to support you through your pregnancy, birth and postnatal period.

We offer a 24 hour call out service to ensure that any woman who requests to have a homebirth is accommodated.  Although the midwifery teams consist of predominantly  traditional midwives we are endeavouring to try and give as much continuity possible, ensuring that women are seen by their named midwife throughout their pregnancy and following on with postnatal care.
