The Heart of England anaesthetics team operate at many levels throughout the Trust’s hospitals and directorates. With 59 consultants and 63 other doctors, other healthcare professionals, business and administrative staff, we offer anaesthesia and pain management services across all the sites of the organisation.
We of course provide analgesia – the blocking of the sensation of pain – during operations and surgical procedures, but in addition provide pre- and post-operative care designed to ‘work up’ and ‘work down’ patients.
We consider our primary role to monitor a patients’ progress throughout his or her process of care, ensuring that the correct anaesthetic agents are selected, that the patient is in a proper state of health to undergo the operation, and subsequently to ensure that post-operative care is of the highest order.
We also provide training to medical and non-medical staff in various aspects of medicine and nursing. We are part of the Warwickshire School of Anaesthesia in the West Midlands Deanery, providing postgraduate training in anaesthesia, critical care and pain management.
Our commitment to training is borne out by the fact that we currently have within the directorate one of the two West Midlands regional advisers of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, the programme director for the Warwickshire School of Anaesthesia as well as three college tutors of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.
Our staff are highly qualified and hugely experienced professionals, continually refreshing their training and expertise to ensure the continued high quality of the directorate’s services and the quality of our care. With expertise and innovation at every level of the directorate, we are rightly proud of our service levels and performance.
From pre-operative bloodwork and consultation, through to full and careful analgesic monitoring during procedures and complete post-anaesthesia care, the anaesthetics directorate provides a complete package of pain management services, offering patients peace of mind and freeing them from anxiety and discomfort.
In addition, we continue to be one of the Trust’s most dynamic and forward-looking directorates, and will be constantly looking for ways to further improve the standards and quality of our already excellent care.
The Anaesthetics Directorate maintains a presence on all three of the Trust’s sites. Please don’t hesitate to contact us, at whichever hospital in which you are most interested. General queries should be directed towards Heartlands Hospital on 0121 424 3438.
