Cancer unit to benefit as hospital charity and neighbouring school join forces for inaugural fete

Ward 19 football match 2014_02A lifesaving cancer unit is to benefit as a Birmingham hospital and a neighbouring school join forces to raise vital funds through an inaugural charity fete.

The Heartlands Fete on Sunday 13 September is a joint venture between the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust Charity and Waverley School, and the school will kindly be hosting the charity day for the local community. There will be a range of attractions on offer, including a special guest appearance by a number of Birmingham City footballers who will be on hand for photos and autographs with fans.

The footballing theme will continue with one of the highlights of the day as a charity football match takes place between teams of doctors, nurses and staff from Heartlands all battling out to win the cup. There will also be a variety of stalls, including a range of food from British to Asian cuisine, as well as live music, bouncy castles, donkey rides, fairground rides, face painting and even a Bollywood-themed dance show.

All proceeds from the fete will support the Heartlands Ward 19 charitable fund, which treats some of the most severe forms of blood cancer including Leukaemia.

Kathy Holder, specialist BMT nurse on Ward 19, said: “It will be a great day for all the family and we are delighted to have been chosen to benefit from the event. All the money raised will be fundamental to improving patient care and making their cancer journey that little bit easier.

“The funds will be destined not only for the purchase of further specialist equipment for the unit, but also to enhance nursing care with our new Chemotherapy at Home service.”

The event continues the collaboration between the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust Charity and Waverley School following the fantastic success of the school’s annual Diversity Day in July which raised an impressive £2,700 for the Children’s Emergency Department at Heartlands.

Uzma Shaheen, community fundraiser for Heartlands Hospital, added: “We would like to thank Waverley School for their amazing support in hosting the fete. I hope it will be a great occasion to unite the local community for a wonderful cause and for everyone to enjoy a day full of fun.”

The Heartlands Fete takes place on Sunday 13 September from 12pm until 4pm and entry is free. For more information about the Heartlands Fete or any other fundraising initiative at Heartlands Hospital, please email uzma.shaheen@heartofengland.nhs.uk or call 0121 424 3838.
