FOI 0269 – Surgical Assessment Units

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) completed a merger by acquisition of Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) on 1st April 2018.   UHB includes Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Solihull Hospital and Community Services, Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield and Birmingham Chest Clinic.

 

Due to historical differences in data collection/reporting across UHB and the former Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust some responses have been provided by hospital site.

4. What specialties access this area?

General Surgery, Liver, Vascular, ENT, Maxillofacial, Hands

5. What is the population that the acute surgical services cover?

West Midlands area and Hands, ENT, Maxillofacial the whole regional area.

6. What is the staffing model for nursing?

The assessment ratio is based on WMQRS Critical Care Quality Standards: 1:1 in the resuscitation area, 1:2 in ‘step-down’ or high dependency, and 1:4 in ‘majors’. Staffing should be flexible and able to respond to fluctuations in the number and dependency of patients. The rest of the area is Trust agreed ratio of 1:8 during the day and 1:12 overnight.

7. What is the medical cover?

Consultant on call, 1x registrar, 1x senior house officer, 1 x Foundation Year 1

Birmingham Heartlands Hospital – 12
Good Hope Hospital – 6 Trolleys
Solihull Hospital – Not Applicable

3. How many chairs are there?

Birmingham Heartlands Hospital – 10
Good Hope Hospital – 6
Solihull Hospital – Not Applicable

4. What specialties access this area?

Birmingham Heartlands Hospital – General surgery, urology, ENT, Vascular
Good Hope Hospital – General Surgery
Solihull Hospital – Not Applicable

5. What is the population that the acute surgical services cover?

West Midland area in both SAU`s. Good Hope Hospital also have patients from Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Walsall.

6. What is the staffing model for nursing?

Both Heartlands Hospital and Good Hope Hospitals SAUs are situated on ward areas so are staffed in conjunction with the ward establishments.

7. What is the medical cover?

Consultant on call, 1x registrar, 1x senior house officer, 1 x Foundation Year 1.
Heartland also has 1 Advanced Care Practitioner.
