FOI 0292 – Alcohol Service Teams

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) completed a merger by acquisition of Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) on 1st April 2018.   UHB includes Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Solihull Hospital and Community Services, Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield and Birmingham Chest Clinic.

Due to historical differences in data collection/reporting across UHB and the former Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust some responses have been provided by hospital site.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital

I write under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to request the following information on alcohol care teams.

1. How many alcohol care teams has your Trust had in operation during each financial year from 2012/13 to 2017/18 inclusive? For each year please detail how many Full Time Equivalent (FTE) staff members were in each team and what was the composition of each team?

Queen Elizabeth Hospital does not have an alcohol care team. However, Reach Out Recovery and Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust’s RAID team, third party organisations has alcohol care teams that operate within the Hospital.

2. How many of your hospitals currently operate a 24/7 alcohol care team service with three or more FTE staff members per team? How many of your hospitals currently operate a 24/7 alcohol care team service with less than three FTE staff members per team?

3. How many FTE alcohol liaison nurses has your Trust hired during each financial year from 2010/11 to 2017/18 inclusive? For each year, if possible, please detail whether those FTE alcohol liaison nurses were based in an alcohol care team.

Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospital

I write under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to request the following information on alcohol care teams.

1. How many alcohol care teams has your Trust had in operation during each financial year from 2012/13 to 2017/18 inclusive? For each year please detail how many Full Time Equivalent (FTE) staff members were in each team and what was the composition of each team?

The Trust does not directly manage any alcohol care teams. However, third party organisations have alcohol care teams that operate in the Trust’s hospitals.

Change, Grow, Live (CGL), or sometimes known as Reach Out Recovery, are the Birmingham service that operates within Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (BHH). CGL is the gatekeeper for all referrals with BHH.

They also cover Good Hope Hospital by the telephone but do not have a team which is situated at the hospital.

Solihull Integrated Addiction Service (SIAS) and Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust’s RAID team covers Solihull Hospital. When SIAS or RAID is at Solihull Hospital they will see any patient irrelevant of postcode for drug or alcohol issues.
