University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) completed a merger by acquisition of Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) on 1st April 2018. UHB includes Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Solihull Hospital and Community Services, Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield and Birmingham Chest Clinic.
Due to historical differences in data collection/reporting across UHB and the former Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust some responses have been provided by hospital site.
Queen Elizabeth Hospital
1.1 Spend on phlebotomy supplies with our main supplier for the most recent two years. This would not include additional spending on phlebotomy supplies from other departments or wards, however the majority of spend is from the Pathology department.
1.2 Could please explain how such supplies are distributed to, or procured by other departments and wards in the hospital.
All of the items are purchased by the wards themselves, they are not purchased and distributed by the phlebotomy service
2. Phlebotomy department paycosts and headcount over the last two years.
3. Description of equipment used in Automated Haematology and Clinical Chemistry departments.
Biochemistry: Roche cobas 8000 (1 x p512, 1 x MPA (Pre analytics) 1 x cobas 8000 (Chemistry and Immunoassay modules)
Haematology: 5 x Beckman DxH800 and 3 x Werfen ACL TOPS (700) analyser for coagulation
Tosoh G8 analyser for HbA1c

These products are purchased mainly through the Abbott Managed Service Contract.
They are supplied to Wards, Out Patients and GP Practices. Some locations may order additional products for venepuncture, however I am unable to provide this information.
Sundries includes tube adapter holders, luer adaptors etc.
2. Phlebotomy department paycosts and headcount over the last two years.
3. Description of equipment used in Automated Haematology and Clinical Chemistry departments.
Haematology run Sysmex XN analysers for Full Blood Counts with a total of eight XN’s across three sites.
Coagulation run Werfen TOPS analysers with two 550’s and three 350’s across three sites.
Clinical Chemistry run Abbott instrumentation with four C1600’s, seven I2000’s and three 8000’s across three sites.
