FOI 0374 – Aged 24 and under who have died receiving in-patient psychiatric care

Freedom of Information Request: 0374

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) completed a merger by acquisition of Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) on 1st April 2018.   UHB includes Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Solihull Hospital and Community Services, Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield and Birmingham Chest Clinic.

Due to historical differences in data collection/reporting across UHB and the former Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust some responses have been provided by hospital site.

We are seeking data on the deaths of children and young people in receipt of in-patient mental health services (both voluntary in-patients and detained).

For each year (2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013), please provide statistical information relating  to children and young people (aged 24 and under) who have died receiving in-patient psychiatric care at the time of their death in any hospital, unit or private setting under the management or control of Heart Of England NHS Foundation Trust. Please provide data on;

1. The number of children who have died whilst receiving in-patient psychiatric care at the time of their death.

2. A breakdown of age, gender and ethnicity.

3. A breakdown of the cause of death where known.

4. For each year, please provide the patient status, i.e. whether the child was detained or non detained at the time of their death

5. The location of the death i.e. the hospital, NHS Trust, unit name or private provider.

We do not hold this information because the Trust does not provide mental health services.  We have a liaison service which is known as RAID (Rapid Access and Intervention Department) which is provided through Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (BMSHFT).
