FOI 0440 – Capacity Team and Boarding Policy

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) completed a merger by acquisition of Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) on 1st April 2018.  For the purposes of this request we have answered on behalf of the pre-merger UHB i.e. Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

This FOI request is a follow up to FOI 0353
1. In relation to the ED scoring system you sent to me could you provide some context to?

a. Who this is sent to?

The Chief Operating Officer (COO), Deputy COO, ED Matron, Clinical Site Team, Divisional Team

Operations team and the ED CSL

b. In what format (text/email)?

Received via email

c. and how frequently?

Hourly

d. Each area has an associated point system could you clarify the significance of the points and the trigger points your trust follows in relation to these

The points provide an overview to the divisional and site team of the demand in terms of numbers and patient complexity in the Emergency Department. The values feed into the escalation systems.

3. In response to the question “When a patient is discharged, a copy of an example alert the capacity team receives e.g. ‘bed alert’ “you replied:

The Clinical Site leads receive text direct through to BB every time a bed becomes empty.

Please could you provide an example of such a message?

“The following beds are now vacant – Ward – Bed number”
