FOI 0478 2019/20 Procurement of Breathing Circuits

Freedom of Information Request: 0478 2019/20

I am looking for information regarding the number, types and manufacturers of breathing circuits procured by the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust (and/or any other predecessor trust of the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust) over a 5 year period. By breathing circuits, I mean any single-use or reusable breathing circuit for use in mechanical ventilation of patients.

 For each type of breathing circuit procured by the NHS at any point between January 1997 and December 2002 (the “relevant period”), would you please provide the following information:

  • Model name;
  • Manufacturer name;
  • Manufacturer product code;
  • Number of units procured; and
  • Whether each circuit was intended for use in providing
  • anaesthetic gases
  • respiratory gases (e.g. oxygen), or
  • either anaesthetic gases or respiratory gases interchangeably.I would be very grateful if you were also able to provide the requested data in an electronic, Microsoft Excel-readable format (e.g. .xls, .xlsx, .csv).

  • For the number of units procured, could you please provide (to the extent possible) a breakdown by month for the relevant period. If it is not possible to provide a breakdown by month, please provide a breakdown by the next smallest period that you are able to (e.g. bi-monthly, quarterly).

Clarification from requestor regarding hospitals:

I am interested in procurement by or for any of the hospitals for which either UHB or HEFT were responsible in the relevant time period. I understand that this would include at least:

  • Good Hope Hospital;
  • Birmingham Heartlands Hospital;
  • Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham
  • Solihull Hospital; and
  • Selly Oak Hospital (closed in 2011).

The Trust does not hold the information for the time period you have requested: please note that the DoH record retention guidance states that the retention period for financial transaction is 6 years after the financial year in which they took place
