University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) completed a merger by acquisition of Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) on 1st April 2018.  Due to historical differences in data collection/reporting across UHB and the former Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust this response has been provided by hospital site.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital

  1. How many specialist urology/continence nurses were there within your Trust in each of the last five financial years?

2013/14 – 10 Urology CNS/Nurse

2014/15- 10 Urology CNS/ Nurse

2015/16 – 11 Urology CNS/ Nurse/ Educator

2016/17 – 10 Urology CNS/ Nurse/ Educator

2017/18 – 11 Urology CNS/ Nurse/ Educator

  1. How many hours of staff training were allocated in the last financial year, under the remit of continence care, to catheterisation?

Five 3-hour catheterisation courses run each year. Approximately 50-60 hours of staff training are dedicated to continence care per year.

  1. Do you have a named continence lead within your Trust? If so, what is their name?

No.

  1. Are catheter passports used within your Trust?

Yes.

  1. If no, can you provide a reason as to why?

            Not applicable.

  1. If yes, has the number of passports given to patients increased over the last 5 years?

Catheter passport was introduced in 2017-2018.

  1. If a catheter passport is used within your Trust does it contain a urine colour chart?

Yes.

  1. Do you have a urine colour chart on every toilet door within each hospital?

No.

  1. Do you test patients presenting with urinary bladder complications with a bladder ultrasound scanner?

This is dependent on the clinical assessment, a scanner is always available if required.

Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospital

  1. How many specialist urology/continence nurses were there within your Trust in each of the last five financial years?

We do not hold this information. However, we can tell you that in approximately the last two years there have been seven urology nurse specialists in post. We do not have any continence specialist nurses.

  1. How many hours of staff training were allocated in the last financial year, under the remit of continence care, to catheterisation?

We do not hold this information. However, we can tell you that health care assistance are provided with continence and catheter care training as part of their ongoling development programme and care certificate. The trust runs a male catheterisation course. Urology clinical nurse specialists provide ad hoc training to wards and departments as requested.

No.

Yes.

Not applicable.
