FOI 0557: Pathology Trainees

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) completed a merger by acquisition of Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) on 1st April 2018.  Due to historical differences in data collection/reporting across UHB and the former Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust this response has been provided by hospital site.

For each pathology discipline in your Trust/Health Board (i.e. Microbiology, Haematology, Blood transfusion, Biochemistry, Histopathology etc…);

 

  1. On average how many trainee Biomedical scientist/university biomedical science placement students do you have a year? 

Blood Science (Biochemistry, Haematology, transfusion) – 2 internal trainees.

  1. What types of evidence are used by your students/trainees to meet the HCPC Standards of proficiency for biomedical scientists for standards 14.26 and 14.16 in the certificate of competence i.e. reflective sheet, essay, competency etc…?

Personal statement or reflective practice, questions set by trainer.

  1. Approximately how many hours of teaching/training is dedicated to Point of Care Testing (POCT)/ Near patient testing (NPT) for each student/trainee? 

Between 1 day – 1 week during rotation and agreement with the POCT team.

  1. What types of teaching/training do you give these students/trainees in Point of Care Testing (POCT) i.e. seminars, practical training etc…? 

Overview delivered by POCT team with Oral/practical demonstration/observation.

Training booklet given with questions to complete after training delivered.

  1. Do your students/trainees get a secondment/rotation into a POCT section and if so, for how long?

As POCT is a non-rotational section then secondment is by arrangement with the POCT Team. Generally this will be 1 day for most trainees, and 1 week for RCDM military trainees.
