The Trust does hold information for the parts of the question in bold.  However, providing the exact figure would breach Data Protection legislation. This is due to the small numbers involved. We are therefore withholding this information under Section 40 of the Freedom of Information Act

  1. Can you give a yearly estimate of the amount of money University Hospitals Birmingham saves by downgrading health care assistants from band 3 to band 2?

Staff whose roles are downgraded receive pay protection for a period of time depending on their length of service with the Trust. The Trust has therefore not saved any money to date.

  1. Can you provide the reasons health care assistants were downgraded from band 3 to band 2 at University Hospitals Birmingham?

The staff roles were downgraded as the duties of their jobs have changed considerably over the years since their jobs were evaluated under the Agenda for Change (AfC) job evaluation scheme. The job descriptions for their roles were re-evaluated under AfC and identified as being Band 2. The AfC system ensures equality for all staff and that the bandings for jobs are appropriate for the tasks being carried out.
