FOI 0763 Compiling Patient Records

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) completed a merger by acquisition of Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) on 1st April 2018.  Due to historical differences in data collection/reporting across UHB and the former Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust this response has been provided by hospital site.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham

  • How do your clinicians compile patient records (e.g. using pen and paper, word processing, speech recognition or another method)?

    Via in-house electronic patient record with a mixture of codified, structured data and free text.

  • Has your Trust deployed technology that will enable doctors to more quickly and accurately complete and/or process clinical documents? If so, what technology has been deployed and when was it deployed?

    In-house electronic patient record incremental implementation commenced in 1990’s – fully rolled out Trust-wide by 2010.

  • Is your Trust using artificial intelligence to improve patient services? If not, do you plan to invest in these services in the next 12 months?

    Artificial intelligence is an emerging field within the health sector. There are plans to scope how this would work within a healthcare setting.

 

Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospital

  • How do your clinicians compile patient records (e.g. using pen and paper, word processing, speech recognition or another method)?

    Currently mixed economy – mainly paper based along with disparate databases. Transitioning to QEHB systems within next 12 months post merger.

  • Has your Trust deployed technology that will enable doctors to more quickly and accurately complete and/or process clinical documents? If so, what technology has been deployed and when was it deployed?

    Currently mixed economy – mainly paper based along with disparate databases. Transitioning to QEHB systems within next 12 months, post-merger.

  • Is your Trust using artificial intelligence to improve patient services? If not, do you plan to invest in these services in the next 12 months?
    Currently transitioning to QEHB systems post merger. Artificial intelligence is an emerging field within the health sector.  There are plans to scope how this would work within a healthcare setting.
