FOI 0804 Achalasia Patients and Treatments 2020/21

Freedom of Information Request: 0804 2020/21

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) completed a merger by acquisition of Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) on 1st April 2018.  Due to historical differences in data collection/reporting across UHB and the former Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust this response has been provided by hospital site.

Hospital admissions for TREATMENT OF ACHALASIA

I would be grateful if you would provide the following information separately for the following categories:

  1. Total number of White British patients
  2. Total number of Pakistani patients
  3. Total number of Indian patients
  4. Total number of Bangla Deshi patients

for the period 2010 – 2019 inclusive

  • The number who underwent HELLER’S MYOTOMY
  • The number who underwent ENDOSCOPIC PNEUMATIC DILATATION
  • The number who underwent ENDOSCOPIC OESOPHAGEAL INJECTION OF BOTULINUM TOXIN
  • The number who underwent ENDOSCOPIC OESOPHAGEAL MYOTOMY (POEM PROCEDURE)

separately for the four ethnic categories.

Patient’s ethnicities have been categorised as per the NHS Data Dictionary definitions for Ethnic Category Code, where:

White British = A

Indian = H

Pakistani = J

Bangladeshi = K

Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham: data from 01/01/2010 – 31/12/2019

Ethnicity HELLER’S MYOTOMY ENDOSCOPIC PNEUMATIC DILATATION ENDOSCOPIC OESOPHAGEAL INJECTION OF BOTULINUM TOXIN ENDOSCOPIC OESOPHAGEAL MYOTOMY (POEM PROCEDURE)
White British 36 42 0 8
Pakistani 3 5 0 3
Indian 2 1 0 1
Bangladeshi 0 0 0 0

Please note the above data summarises the number of procedures, not the number of unique patients – for example, if a single patient had two of the above procedures, each procedure would be counted separately.

It is not possible from the way our data is recorded to identify the purpose for a hospital admission, i.e. to see which patients underwent the above procedures as treatment for Achalasia.

We have provided admissions of patients with an Achalasia diagnosis who underwent the requested procedures.

Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospitals: data from 07/2015 – 12/2019

Ethnicity HELLER’S MYOTOMY ENDOSCOPIC PNEUMATIC DILATATION ENDOSCOPIC OESOPHAGEAL INJECTION OF BOTULINUM TOXIN ENDOSCOPIC OESOPHAGEAL MYOTOMY (POEM PROCEDURE)
White British 15 12 4 0
