University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) completed a merger by acquisition of Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) on 1st April 2018. Due to historical differences in data collection/reporting across UHB and the former Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust this response has been provided by hospital site.
Please could you provide all recorded figures for the following questions:
Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham:
- What were the recorded reasons for the removal of IV peripheral cannulas within your hospital trust within the last 10 years? Please provide annual numbers for each reason for removal.
- What is the annual number of catheter related bloodstream infections within your hospital trust within the last 10 years?
Our Health Informatics systems do not record the information requested above; this information is likely to be held within patients’ files, however if we were to gather this information by retrieving it from individual patient records we would be in breach of the second data protection principle “Personal information must be processed for limited purpose” as this information was not provided to us in order to facilitate Freedom of Information responses.
We are therefore withholding this information under Section 40 (2) of the FOI Act (2000) – this is an absolute exemption meaning there is no requirement to consider the public interest when deciding whether to disclose this information.
