FOI 3182 Celebrity Visitors

  1. Prior to 26.6.2014, what procedures did the Trust have in place to CRB check (or similar) visitors to its sites sanctioned by those sites. i.e.’celebrity’ visitors to wards.

The Trust uses the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) which is the successor to the CRB check.  We DBS check volunteers who will have unsupervised access to patients or are involved in ‘regulated activity’.  Regulated activity is what a barred person cannot do and you can find more information on regulated activity here on the gov.uk website.

With regard to Trust visitors to our wards (not patient’s own visitors), visits do not take place without supervision by a member of ward staff.

  1. What does the Trust currently have in place to CRB check (or similar) visitors to its sites sanctioned by those sites. i.e.’celebrity’ visitors to wards.

All ‘celebrity’ visits to wards will be arranged through either the staff in the ward or through communications as this will usually have a media angle.  Staff are aware that those visitors are to be escorted at all times.

  1. If possible, this information to be broken down into areas, i.e. children’s ward, geriatric wards.

We do not record that information.

  1. How many such visits ‘celebrity’ (entertainers, actors, sports stars etc) took place over the past 3 years?

We are unable to give a specific number, as we have many visits throughout the year. This can be a magician-3 times a month, we have musicians on a weekly basis, art activities on going sometimes once or twice a week. We have pantomimes in the summer and at Christmas. We have footballers as well at Christmas. They are always accompanied by the Health Play Specialist and/or a senior staff member.

  1. Were visitors CRB checked in advance?

Only if they were not escorted.
