FOI 355 – Patient Service Transport Costs

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) completed a merger by acquisition of Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) on 1st April 2018.   UHB includes Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Solihull Hospital and Community Services, Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield and Birmingham Chest Clinic.

Due to historical differences in data collection/reporting across UHB and the former Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust some responses have been provided by hospital site.

 

Queen Elizabeth Hospital

1. Patient service transport costs for financial year 2017/2018

2. How transport costs have been calculated

£597,621 broken down as below:

  • Non-emergency patient transport = £483,444 (costs for period 01/04/17 to 30/04/17, as of 01/05/17
  • Secure mental health transport = £114,177 (costs for period 01/04/17 to 31/03/18)

Costs are based on charges from suppliers.

Pre-agreed contract rates are in place which are based on required staffing levels/ vehicle type and distance travelled.

 

Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospital

2. How transport costs have been calculated

£440,190 broken down as below:

  • Non-emergency patient transport = £243,667 (costs for period 01/04/17 to 30/04/17
  • Secure mental health transport = £196,523 (costs for period 01/04/17 to 31/03/18).

Costs are based on charges from suppliers.
