1.For the most recent two financial years (14/15) and (15/16) please state what the cost of providing food to patients was at your trust per patient per day?

For example: 14/15 – £3.80, 15/16 – £4.20

 

Food Costs for Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust consisting of Heartlands, Good Hope & Solihull Hospitals

2014/2015 Patient Food Cost = £3.81 per head, per day (this figure does not include labour, non pay costs such as disposables, crockery  and cutlery etc. or dietary supplements etc)

2015 /2016 Patient Food Costs = £4.03 per head per day (this figure does not include labour, non pay costs such as disposables, crockery  and cutlery etc. or dietary supplements etc)

2. If you have a figure please state what percentage of food in the most recent financial year (15/16) was returned untouched by patients?

We do not record the amount of food returned by patients

3. If you have an outside caterer that is responsible for supplying food to the Trust, please state the name of the company and how much it was paid by the Trust in (15/16)?

All patient feeding for the Trust is provided by in house Trust staff and cooked fresh at a central production unit based at Solihull Hospital and delivered to Heartlands and Good Hope Hospitals daily.

4. In the 2016 calendar year please state how many complaints you logged relating to the provision of on-site food and give brief details of the nature of those complaints.

During the calendar year 2016 we have produced in excess of 609,000 meals we received a total of 11 complaints consisting mainly of:

  • 8 x Foreign body found in food
  • 3 x Quality Issues – (not to required taste etc)

 

All of the above issues were logged and investigated where appropriate which includes contacting food suppliers.

5. What is the trust’s policy on healthy eating?

We provide a wide range of healthy food choices within our restaurants and coffee shops and we are working towards achieving the ‘Food for Life’ healthy eating award at Bronze level.

There is a two week patient menu in operation offering a continental style breakfast and hot lunch and supper service. Patients can choose from 3 hot choices and 2 cold choices including salads and sandwiches, from the lunch and supper menus.  We are also working towards 100% compliance under part 1b of the national CQUIN for Healthy food for NHS staff, visitors and patients.
