FOI 5673 Blood transfusion and anaemia

· Number of RBC (Red blood cell) units utilised by ward and/ or department in
a) 2015 – 3623 (This is for October to December, as we do not hold the data in a retrievable format prior to this).
b) 2016 – 14,872

· Number of elective surgical procedures cancelled in 2016 due to the patient being identified as anaemic
We do not hold this information as cancellation reasons do not provide that level of detail.

· Number of elective surgical procedures occurring for patients who were anaemic on the day of surgery
As above, we do not hold this information.

Of the above, the number of these procedures that required a blood transfusion Not applicable.

· Following the NICE Quality Standards published in December 2016 on blood transfusion, is the Trust able to meet Quality Standard 1?
The Trust is in the process of meeting all statements for this quality standard:

Statement 1 – People with Iron-Deficiency anaemia who are having surgery are offered iron supplementation before and after surgery. This is in progress.

Statement 2- Adults who are having surgery and expected to have moderate blood loss are offered tranexamic acid. Yes

Statement 3 – People are clinically reassessed and have their haemoglobin levels checked after each unit of red blood cells they receive, unless they are bleeding or are on a chronic transfusion programme. Yes

Statement 4 – People who may need or who have had a transfusion are given verbal and written information about blood transfusion. Yes, this is recorded on the consent section of the blood transfusion care pathway before a patient is given a transfusion.
