New baby simulator joy

SmNewB Baby SimulatorSmiles of joy were all around Heartlands Hospital’s Clinical Skills Centre following a £4,000 donation by G4S staff for a baby simulator.

SimNewB is a vital piece of training equipment which will help save more babies lives through education. The simulator will be used to help train doctors, nurses and physios in recognising and treating illnesses. SimNewB is also controlled remotely and can be programmed to respond like a live patient to the treatment that is given.

The G4S team of porters, cleaners and catering staff raised the funds from a variety of sources – including baking cakes, tombolas and raffles. G4S specialise in facilities management at Heartlands Hospital and have come together to raise money from quiz nights and funded arts and music projects to help doctors and nurses deliver the best care possible for patients.

Tracey Starkey Moore, associate dean in learning innovation and design at Heartlands Hospital, said: “SimNewB will create a safe learning environment that allows practitioners, students and researchers to test and practise new clinical skills in order to enhance individual and team skills.

“The Faculty of Education is committed to ensuring that clinical skills facilities maximise the learning experience for staff and students as a central learning and teaching resource with the aim that simulation can help establish consistent and advancing standards.

“We would like to thank the G4S team for their fundraising efforts. They were incredibly enthusiastic, recognising the opportunities learning can provide and the impact of patient safety.”
