Solihull Community Services is urging local residents, particularly those aged 65 and above, to take preventative steps to eliminate the opportunities for falls during 2014, following more than 2,000 admissions to Solihull Hospital for falls-related incidents in the last year.
With local GPs recording 2,069 hospital referrals over the last 12 months, falls have become a significantly important health issue, particularly during the winter period when cold conditions and chronic health problems can increase the chance of falling. However, most falls occur within the home and are significantly more serious when a person is unable to call for help.
Hip fractures are a particularly serious consequence for older people, as well as Osteoporosis – a common condition where bones have become fragile and weak – making a broken bone more likely after a minor bump or fall. Other factors following a fall, such as loss of confidence, can further reduce independence.
Barbara Jukes, falls advisor at Solihull Community Services, said: “Falls are often due to a number of reasons. Being unable to move easily, having poor balance, reduced muscle tone, suffering from severe pain or being unable to exercise will all increase the risks of falling. Chronic health problems may also contribute to the risks. Factors such as loose rugs, raised door thresholds or bending down to turn off appliances can also play a part.
“It is important to recognise that falls are preventable and individuals can help by making themselves aware of the risks. Any medicines prescribed by a GP should be taken following the instructions, and it is essential to let your GP know if you notice any side effects or do not understand what your medicines are for.
“Keeping warm and well hydrated, eating a well-balanced diet and taking regular exercise will help support general health. Simple measures, such as wearing appropriate footwear, avoiding going out when pavements are slippery and good lighting in the home will also help safeguard against falls.”
