FOI 2859 Liverpool care pathway

END OF LIFE CARE 2013 ManagementPlan Guidance for doctors and nurses _Liverpool Care Pathway

1.)    Have you abolished the Liverpool Care Pathway at your trust? yes

2.)    If no, are you planning to continue to use it? n/a

3.)    If yes, when did you abolish it? After the Neuberger report was released

4.)    If yes, what have you introduced to replace the Liverpool Care Pathway (please attach the guidance that staff work to). The Chief Medical Examiner and palliative care consultants have provided interim guiding principles for staff caring for patients at end of life. The Trust is working with the Leadership Alliance for the Care of Dying People LACDP on guidance post LCP.

When the change occurred in July 2013, we issued the link to the GMC guidance and also the attached document to staff. It was made available on the intranet too with the following text:

Liverpool Care Pathway: Following this week’s media, you will know that an independent review group has recommended that the Liverpool Care Pathway should be phased out over the next few months. Until further guidance on end of life care has been produced and circulated, staff at the Trust have been directed to the help and advice contained within the GMC guidance on end of life care: http://www.gmc-uk.org/End_of_life.pdf_32486688.pdf and we have also circulated the document attached to this week’s bulletin.

We are planning to introduce a Management plan for care of patients at end of life in Hospital (attached) at the end of January

5.)    Have all nurses received training in how to use you new guidance? All staff have received the guiding principles and training is incorporated in the Trust’s End of Life and Bereavement Care modules. When new guidance is issued from The Department of Health training will be provided for staff.
