Top doc to bust myths about organ donation on Twitter

Consultant Dr Julian HullWith National Transplant Week fast approaching, members of the public are invited to take part in an online Question and Answer (Q&A) session on Twitter for information on organ donation from a leading expert at Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust.

Seven Days to Say Yes I Donate is this year’s campaign as part of National Transplant Week to help break down barriers and taboos around organ donation.

Dr Julian Hull, consultant anaesthetist/intensivist and clinical lead for organ donation at the Trust, will take to Twitter on 10 September from 11.30am – 1.30pm toanswer any questions patients and the public have about myths surrounding organ donation and how people can join the NHS Organ Donor Register.

Over 3,700 organ transplants were carried out in England between April 2014 and March 2015. Around 5,900 people in England though are currently waiting for a transplant.

Dr Hull said: “Using social media will offer an exciting opportunity to raise awareness and reach out online to help younger audiences with making important and informed choices about organ donation.

“I am looking forward to addressing a subject not often discussed and being a point of contact for those that want to know more about whether they can be donors, the reasons for being on the organ donation register, and choices surrounding live organ donation.

“It will also be useful to hear what questions and concerns – and maybe misconceptions – members of the public have about these issues.”

To be part of the organ donation Twitter Q+A session, visit the hospital Trust’s Twitter account @heartofengland. If you don’t have a Twitter account already, go to twitter.com and follow a few easy steps to set one up.

You can also show your support for organ donation on Twitter by following @NHSOrganDonor and posting your conversations and photos using #sayidonate. Visit www.organdonation.nhs.uk to find out more information.
