FOI 3252 Stomas and Catheters

You asked:

What formularies and/or guidelines exist for Heart Of England NHS Foundation Trust with regards to the following:

·         Intermittent Self-Catheterisation

·         Collecting Devices (including urine and stoma collection) N.B clarified further to our phone conversation

Our Response:

Self catheterisation: Self catheterisation is a technique taught to patients by suitably trained nurses – usually working in urology or gynaecology or continence.  Most patients in the trust who require self catheterisation will be referred to the urology team for our input.  It is taught with the aid of written guidelines and information supplied by the individual company of the catheter or appliance been used to do the procedure.  The emptying of catheters is done over a toilet.

Stoma Bags: We follow manufacturer’s guidelines regarding teaching stoma care management to patients.  We have Trust local information for specific stoma formation and this is available on the i-care programme and is attached.
